Scottish Vacant and Derelict Land: Regeneration Policy
The Scottish Government has a vision of Scotland where the most disadvantaged and fragile rural communities are supported. Where all places are sustainable and promote well-being.
Regeneration strategy
The Regeneration Strategy was published in 2011 and since then the Scottish Government have delivered programmes to support disadvantaged communities and improve them.
Working together with local communities, businesses and local authorities, vital investment has been provided.
A strong policy framework has also been developed to ensure we deliver our vision for places. These include:
- Town Centre First Principle
- Town Centre Action Plan
- Place Principle
- Place Based Investment Framework
- National Planning Framework 4
Supporting the reuse of vacant and derelict land
Scotland has over 9,200 hectares of vacant and derelict land sites, which can blight communities, harm wellbeing, and limit opportunities. However those sites could offer so much more - they could help solve some of society’s biggest challenges, including around climate change and inequality.
The Scottish Governments encourages the reuse of these sites and supports innovative local approaches to tackling persistent areas of vacant and derelict land.
